The Wellness and Advocacy Center is a self-help drop-in center for people with mental health challenges. It is peer-operated and managed, designed to create a comfortable atmosphere for all. More>
The approach for the Art Program at the Center is to focus on process not on final product. At their Art Room people have many different levels of exposure and understanding of art. Although there are quite a few members with skills at the professional level, many surprise others with their creativity.
The Center promotes their artists work through hosting in-house art shows and sales, participating in outside art shows and by selling Wellness Center original note cards using their artists’ work. Check out their website: www.wellnessandadvocacy.org and some of their artwork at http://www.sonoma-county.org/health/mh/resources/slideshow/index.html.
Sunday, May 2, 2010 - Opening Reception, 5:00-7:00 p.m.
We welcome paintings by Naomi Murakami in a show titled “Smell of Color”. (Appetizers and beverages will be served. Free admission.) The show runs through June.
Naomi Murakami is a Tokyo native artist. About her art, she says, “Fine Art is my Philosophy. It has given me a reason to exist. As a Pseudo-realist, the major themes of my art are intimacy, my personal experiences, and the memories that have built-up who I am." More>
Naomi recalls, “Everyday incidents influence my work like they do my dreams. I can see the influence of Japanese graphic images from my childhood. I liked watching commercial-advertisements rather than actual TV programs most of the time. As a young Japanese girl, I saw Hello Kitty’s face a lot more often than our national flag.”
Naomi is aware that her time making art is not forever, and she feels very happy and blessed every time she is working. You can learn more about Naomi and her art at http://www.catfromjapan.net.
