Jan Stanish considers her early childhood, which was filled with creative play and exploration in nature and supported by a big, loving family, as the beginning of her contemplative journey, where she first experienced God, and when she was most able to live fully and freely as she was created. At a time well into adulthood when she started noticing a deep longing to better understand her life, Jan made space to be still, to recall and value her childhood experiences, and to begin a process of redeeming what had been lost.
These practices and monthly meetings with a spiritual director guided her decision in 2008 to put her role as a certified life coach aside and enroll in The Journey Center’s 2-year program of Training in Spiritual Direction and Contemplative Retreat Leadership. After completion, she continued with advanced courses including group spiritual direction. In 2017, she traveled to North Park Seminary in Chicago to be trained in spiritual direction supervision by Lucy Abbott Tucker.
Jan has been part of the facilitators team for the Journey Center’s Spiritual Direction Formation Program, served on the Journey Center Santa Rosa board, and is currently serving on the Journey Center Association board and the board of her church, BayMarin Community, in San Rafael, California. Jan lives north of San Francisco in Marin County where she enjoys the natural beauty, opportunities to be in nature, art projects, and time with friends and family. As a Spiritual director, she creatively holds space for another’s sacred journey of encountering the Holy and embracing the true self.
